Oktobert-test…

As in test of my patience. Last week I had the bright idea to go to the infamous Oktoberfest in Munich. The plan seemed almost perfect, a coworker and I would buzz into Munich Saturday morning, revel for a few hours in a beer tent with a few thousand of our closest German friends and then catch a train back that evening. Although the trip there went off without a hitch, I was miserably disappointed with Oktoberfest itself.IMG_1435 (1024x683)  IMG_1436 (1024x683) IMG_1441 (1024x683)IMG_1445 (1024x683)Firstly, by the time we got there the beer tents were packed and surrounded by hordes of folks hoping desperately to get in. We stood in line at the Paulaner tent for 45 minutes and gave up.oktoberfest line_1499 Panorama (398x1024)
Truth be told, not sure I would have enjoyed it that much had we made it in.IMG_1452 (1024x683)IMG_1454 (1024x683)Copy of IMG_1463 (683x1024)
I didn’t see anything traditional or particularly interesting while I was there. Munich, a gorgeous city, overflows with tourists making it difficult to get a beer in any part of the city.IMG_1470 (1024x683)

I’m willing to own the fact that I didn’t plan the trip or really know what I was doing, but my fatal error was not realizing that Oktoberfest simply wouldn’t be my scene – there was copious writing on the wall. I’ve been to Mardi Gras a couple of times so have essentially had my fill of massive drunkenness (not even counting typical encounters with most of my rowdy friends).IMG_1443 (1024x683)

Strangely enough, I don't drink beer, hate crowds and am don't like most group activities and yet loved Oktoberfest. But going late on the last Saturday (or when it was full) would definitely not be fun. We went early enough that wandering in and asking to join a table was easy, I had my .5 liter of Apfelschorle, stood on the table with the 10,000+ others, and tried to sing along with everyone else: after a while, I think I got the hang of it. Probably helped that I enjoyed wearing my dirndl and seeing the husband in his Lederhosen:).

Glad you had a good time! Will try to go back better prepared (and on a day that isn't so crowded).
