No fear in this cape…

On Wednesday, my father-in-law Carlos and I headed to his beach house in Cabo Frio (Cold Cape in English), about an hour and half outside of Rio by car. We left at about 15:15, stopping for beer and pasteís along the way, arriving after dark. By the time we went to the store to buy a few essentials (beer and Coke) and got our stuff unloaded, it was time to hit the hay.IMG_2383 (1024x683) IMG_2393 (2) (1024x683) Since we arrived at night, I had no idea what the area looked like. Carlos’s house is small and simple (like a beach house should be) but has a nice view of a small lagoon and the ocean behind it.IMG_2424 (1024x683) It takes less than 5 minutes to walk to Praia do Foguete. As soon as we’d had breakfast on Thursday morning, we took a stroll. I was absolutely blown away by the amazing color of the water and the grandeur of the view. The beach in front of the house is expansive and almost deserted most of the time.IMG_2286 (1024x660)

IMG_2345 (1024x683) We spent the rest of the day beach-hopping. Since he’s taking medication for some aches, Carlos wasn’t drinking; the same cannot be said for me. It’s been a while since I’ve drunk so much beer and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so many gorgeous beaches in one day. More on the UNBELIEVABLE beaches we saw in upcoming posts.IMG_2290 Panorama (1024x253)

Since the beach is fairly deserted, you see a fair amount of wild life. For example, we came across some ground-dwelling owls.IMG_2361 (2)A few months ago, a whale and calf took up temporary residence here. I mostly saw lizards.IMG_2371 (1024x683) Here’s Carlos with Manuel, a local resident who net fishes daily in the area. Yesterday there seemed to be nothing to catch.IMG_2323 (2) (683x1024)
