To grandmother’s house we go…

Except this time it’s not in Teresópolis and it’s not even a house. B’s grandmother has an apartment on Icaraí beach with what has to be one of the best views in the world. From her terrace, you can see several world-famous landmarks.

The view itself is spectacular, even without knowing exactly what you’re looking at. Once you understand the significance of what you can see from there, it’s mind-bending. To top it off, the view of the setting sun is off the charts. I try to go every visit to shoot this wonder of nature.icaraí sunset 2_1988 (1024x660)gisa view_2047 (1024x683)gisa view_2147 Panorama (1024x325)

Niterói Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC)

If you pay attention, sooner or later you’ll see this structure appearing in commercials all over the world. It is a work of the world famous Brazilian architect, Oscar Neimeyer.IMG_2137 (2) (1024x685) Note that you can see clearly the skyline of downtown Rio as well. Here are a few shots of this beautiful example of modern architecture from the other side during the day. MAC_3756 Panorama (1024x344)IMG_3740 (1024x667)IMG_3770 (649x1024)

Corcovado

This mountain hosts the famous statue of Christ that has come to symbolize Rio.IMG_2168 (2) (1024x682)

Sugar Loaf

Another world class landmark. See this post for details on our trip there.IMG_2150 (2)

Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers)

From the beach in Ipanema, the brothers look much different.IMG_2167 (2)Here’s how we usually see the Brothers.IMG_0103 (1024x682)

Pedra da Gávea

The mountain with the flat top in the center of the picture below is the Pedra da Gávea. Pedra means rock and Gávea is a neighborhood in Rio. You can tandem hang glide from there.IMG_2070 (504x763)Here are a couple of videos of the view. You can hear the traffic on the street in front of the building. You can also hear people playing paddle ball on the beach! In the foreground of the second clip, you can see the catamaran passing that acts as a ferry between Rio and Niterói.
